A University of Pennsylvania-led study in which training was provided to a high-stress U.S. military group preparing for deployment to Iraq has demonstrated a positive link between mindfulness training, or MT, and improvements in mood and working memory.

It can be challenging sometimes for parents to maintain a cool head around their misbehaving children. The results of a new study reveal that the mothers whose negativity was most strongly linked with their child's challenging behaviors were those with the poorest working memory skills. These findings suggest that education and intervention efforts for improving parenting may be more effective if they incorporate strategies that enhance working memory skills in parents.

Department of Neurology scientists at UCLA have confirmed that blindness causes structural changes in the brain, implying that the brain may re-organize itself functionally in order to adapt to a loss in sensory inputs.

A new study looks at binge drinking's impact on attention and visual working memory processes in young Spanish university students.
Results indicate that binge drinkers expend more attentional effort to complete a given task, and also have problems differentiating between relevant and irrelevant information

Working memory or short-term memory is related to the ability to pass intelligence tests and is stored in the parietal cortex. However, the role of other areas activated during use of visual memory is poorly understood. IDIBAPS and Karolinska investigators have programmed a complex virtual system that simulates a network of neurons, according to which the prefrontal cortex reinforces the activation of the parietal cortex. This hypothesis is confirmed by functional magnetic resonance data.

We receive much of our information through our visual system, but it was unknown how much of this visual information is actively involved in short-term memory. A new study in Psychological Science suggests that during short term memory, the visual area of the brain is actively "thinking" about a specific feature of an object (e.g. color or orientation), to ensure that the information will be maintained and not forgotten.

Vanderbilt University researchers have discovered that early visual areas, long believed to play no role in higher cognitive functions such as memory, retain information previously hidden from brain studies. The researchers made the discovery using a new technique for decoding data from functional magnetic resonance imaging or fMRI. The findings are a significant step forward in understanding how we perceive, process and remember visual information.

A recent study showed that the executive functioning of working memory in people suffering from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is similar with that of the normal elderly, throwing weight on the hypothesis that MCI is an accelerated form of normal aging.

A new study shows how our very short-term "working memory," which allows the brain to stitch together sensory information, operates. The system retains a limited number of high-resolution images for a few seconds, rather than a wider range of fuzzier impressions.
