What is Consciousness?

The dictionary defines it as: an alert cognitive state in which you are aware of yourself and your situation; "he lost consciousness".

When does consciousness begin and does it end?

Most people can remember events back to when they were 4-5 years old, but not much beyond that. Does this mean we weren't conscious before this time? Or is consciousness tied to memory somehow?

Just the beginning

Philosophers, scientists, and even the average joe, have been trying to figure out what consciousness is for thousands of years. This web site will try to sort and organize all of the "ideas", research and discussion to one place, where hopefully we can all find some fulfilling answers.
